THE CONNECTION THAT MATTERS

Your building raises the alarm.
Monitoring carries it further.

Your fire alarm system detects and signals conditions within the building. Monitoring equipment sends the available signals to a receiving centre, where operators follow the response procedures agreed for your property.

Your fire alarm

The existing panel provides alarm, supervisory and trouble outputs, where available.

The monitoring connection

Compatible equipment transmits signals over the selected communication path.

The receiving centre

Operators follow the property’s procedures for emergency and building-contact notifications.

Sherwood handles the monitoring connection. Fire alarm installation, inspection, maintenance and repairs remain with your qualified fire alarm contractor.

DIFFERENT SIGNALS. CLEAR NEXT STEPS.

Understand what
your system is reporting.

An alarm, a condition needing attention and an equipment fault are different events. We plan the interface so the receiving centre can distinguish the available signal types.

ALARM

A fire alarm event.

The panel reports an alarm, which may originate from detection, a pull station or sprinkler waterflow, depending on the system.

Response

The monitoring centre follows the property’s fire response procedures, including notifying emergency services as required.

SUPERVISORY

A condition needs attention.

A monitored fire protection condition is outside its normal state—for example, a sprinkler valve supervisory condition.

Response

The designated contacts are notified according to the agreed instructions for the property.

TROUBLE

A fault needs service.

The panel reports a fault, such as a power, battery or circuit issue. Monitoring communication faults are also considered in the design.

Response

The appropriate contacts are notified so the responsible service company can investigate.

The detail received depends on the interface. Common alarm, supervisory and trouble outputs may identify the category without identifying the individual device or its location.

A CONNECTION DESIGNED FOR YOUR SITE

Cellular. Internet.
Or a coordinated pair.

We assess equipment compatibility, cellular coverage, network reliability and backup power before proposing a communication arrangement.

Cellular monitoring

A suitable communicator sends signals over the mobile network. Coverage and antenna position matter.

IP / Ethernet

A compatible connection uses the building’s wired internet service. Supporting network equipment and backup power are reviewed.

Dual-path arrangements

Compatible IP and cellular paths can provide redundancy. Supervision, failure reporting and power are planned together.

What does connection supervision mean?

The receiving equipment checks that the communication arrangement is operating as intended. Active and passive arrangements use different approved methods, test transmissions and failure-reporting settings. The correct arrangement depends on the applicable requirements, equipment listing and receiving centre.

BEHIND THE CONNECTION

Signals received.
Procedures followed.
People informed.

Professional monitoring combines the building’s signals with current contact information and a defined response plan.

We coordinate signal testing, confirm the event categories received and help establish a clear handover for the property and its service team.

Separate equipment. Clear responsibilities. One coordinated handover.

Define the scope together

Review panel outputs, the monitoring interface, equipment location, communication requirements and any certificate requirements before installation.

Coordinate the connection

Agree who handles each part of the work, site access, the monitoring account and the test window with the building representative.

Test and hand over clearly

Coordinate alarm, supervisory, trouble and restoration tests as applicable. Confirm signal receipt and explain who to contact for monitoring support or fire alarm service.

Have a ULC certificate requirement?

Tell us at the enquiry stage. We confirm the applicable CAN/ULC-S561 requirements and the responsible providers before defining the scope. A listed product or monitoring centre alone does not certify the complete installation. Site certificates must be issued through an appropriately ULC Listed company.

Changing providers?
Replacing telephone lines?

Start with a review of the existing equipment, contract and communication service. We assess whether the current connection can be retained or needs upgrading.

Coordinate the changeover and signal testing before the old monitoring service or telephone connection is cancelled.

BEFORE WE GET STARTED

A few practical questions.

Do you install or inspect the building’s fire alarm system?

No. Sherwood’s scope here is the monitoring connection and associated monitoring equipment. Fire alarm panels, detectors, pull stations, horns, strobes, inspections and fire alarm repairs remain with your qualified fire alarm contractor.

Can you work alongside our existing fire alarm company?

Yes. We can coordinate connection planning and monitoring signal tests with your fire alarm contractor. The equipment, interface, responsibilities and scheduling are agreed for the project.

Does every building need the same monitoring arrangement?

No. Requirements depend on the building and applicable requirements from the authority having jurisdiction, insurer or project specification. Communication paths, supervision and any certificate requirement need to be confirmed for the property.

What should we send for a quotation?

Send the property address, building use, panel make and model, existing monitoring details, any drawings or written requirements and your fire alarm contractor’s contact. Include the target date and any certificate requirement. Please leave passwords and access codes out of the enquiry.
